Independence Day 2007 (USA)

In 1776, a group decided to separate themselves from the rule of what they (rightly) considered a despotic ruler. Periodically — but especially in the last 50 years — the ruling party apparently wishes it were not so. This is our current situation. It is time to restore the rule of law.

Common Sense, by Thomas Paine

But where says some is the King of America? I’ll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal Brute of Britain. Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve as monarchy, that in America THE LAW IS KING. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is. [h/t Digby]

The flag is flying from the front of the house and it should be a great day. It is supposed to unofficially push 118ºF (officially 112ºF) and it is already 110º (12:33 -0700 GMT) at the monitoring station where I work. The “panel” currently reads 113ºF, but that page is dynamic and is dumped hourly to the summary I linked to above.

Off to be independent!
