So, here we are, a day before the inauguration of the 45th President of the USA, Donald J. Trump. It would seem that there is a collective holding of the breath as we ready to push off this ski run. I think it might be more than a double diamond. I’m not sure if the Ski Patrol will even respond to our pleas or PIEPS signals. “You’re on your own up there, buddy. Maybe you can see if that Heli pilot will come back and get you…/static white noise/”
On this day in 1999 I started this weblog using Userland’s EditThisPage software. Here it still is, 17 years later along with a great many people I have met through this medium. Be well all…
Are any of you or do any of you know of someone who works as a programmer / coder / whatever in the Denver, Boulder, or Colorado Springs area that we could schedule a job shadow for my son who is a freshman at Wheat Ridge High School in Wheat Ridge, Colorado?
He is most especially interested in being a gaming programmer (of course) but I think anyone who does programming would be a great experience for him at this stage. Thanks in advance!
Oh, we will still be able to smoke recreational pot for now at least, but by any indication, the GOP will trounce any and all proposed November 8 initiatives that will roll back the systematic elimination or contraction of social, economic, and environmental progress we have fought for in the past 20 years. The Koch brothers and others are pouring money into Super PACs that are producing really slick TV and print ads that; (1 oppose restoring school funding to pre-2008 levels (Taxes!), (2 advancements in state-wide health care (Big Government! Taxes!), (3 removing indentured servitude in the state penal system (Law & Order!), (4 Assisted Suicide (Don’t make the Baby Jesus Cry!), (5 hamstringing the ability for ballot initiatives to be brought to a vote in state election (Fscking Socialists! This ain’t the People’s Republic of Colorado! edit Oil companies can frack anywhere we damn well want to, who do you think runs things around here?/edit), (6 $12 state minimum wage (Bad for business! Not a market solution! Will kill the ‘recovery’!), (7 Denver Area Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (Socialism! Not a Market Solution! Taxes!), and (8 Increase in taxes on a pack of Cigarettes and other tobacco products (Taxes!).
These ads are good, slickly produced, sound reasonable, and stand in ‘reasonable and measured’ opposition to the increasingly oppressive, government overreach that is threatening to destroy the very fabric of life in Colorado we’ve been able to salvage after the common-sense restrictions imposed after the Liberals Recession following Obama’s election.
Arguments are presented in a way that seems sensible to low-information voters and just ‘the right thing to do’. Local and state level Democratic candidates are presented as ‘Tax and spend liberals!’ (yes, we’re back to those tropes) and non-partisan offices are nevertheless populated with reasonable candidates that are opposed by those that would take your rights away and give them to people who do not deserve them. No, really. Schools Board elections, District Attorneys, and other races feature ads that are likewise polarized and low information.
As far as I can tell, the Democratic Party in Colorado is having a had time organizing the GOTV efforts for the election, much less doing any outreach. I fear for the outcome for a majority of the races and questions below our contentious Presidential election.
Also, don’t forget to register AND vote on November 8.
Well worth a read, IMNSHO.
I remember it, things weren’t so bad, pretty darn good, in fact…
Goodbye and good riddance.
Angered by the cultural transformations of the 1960s, Mrs. Schlafly led grass-roots campaigns against Communism, abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment.
I watched the video feed on CSPAN and synched that with the snark along commentary at The Majority Report. Great commentary on a slow-motion snooze fest. Ugh.
Craziness, bad craziness…
My semi-coherent thoughts are that Scotland and Northern Ireland will looking to jump out of the UK now. Whatever exists of the British Commonwealth has got to be affected by all this as well.
Europe is going to react with their own independence referenda: Greece, definitely, but also Italy, likely Spain, and some of the other nations that can’t handle the German-backed austerity measures.
Right now we’re watching the entire global economy tanking. We could be witnessing a meltdown greater than the collapse of 2007-2008.
Cue a reread of Thom Hartmann’s “The Crash of 2016“?
And, in my little mind, Bran also = the Three-Eyed Raven, AND the Night’s King. No, really. Please wait for it, I’m currently writing it. A foundational post is here.
