WordPress 2.0.4 is Out

Filed under: Software, Weblogs — Hal @ 11:16 pm

This time I must do the upgrade!

Development Blog › WordPress 2.0.4
WordPress 2.0.4, the latest stable release in our Duke series, is available for immediate download. This release contains several important security fixes, so it’s highly recommended for all users.

I mean, I did upgrade to 2.0.1! :-)

[20 minutes later:] OK, upgrading WordPress just keeps getting easier. That 20 minutes includes download and decompressing, backing up the server databases, ftp time, going to the bathroom and getting a fresh Diet Dr Pepper. So upgrade already.

OK, I did Audrey’s (who was still at 1.5.2!) and a couple more blogs in our account area. Everyone is on the current release and has Askimet. That is a first…

I Blame Alabama (the Band, Not the State) As Well

Filed under: Entertainment, Music, Popular Culture — Hal @ 1:58 pm

I had never heard of Jack Sparks before, but I have been big fan of all sorts of music for a long time, and what I have come to understand is now called ‘Roots’ and ‘Alt Country’ especially. So naturally I was intrigued by this article which attempts to delve into why what is being passed off as Country music expletive so much. I agree 100% with 90% of what he says, which is pretty good.

Somebody keeps killing Alt Country…

If you’re one of those people who believes that you’re listening to Country Music when you turn on KEEY, K102, America’s worst Country Station, then don’t read any further. It has always been my chief premise that 90% of what’s played on that station is not Country Music; it’s jingles designed to sell tampons. So, if you disagree with me on that theory, everything that follows will either be wrong or an insult to your concept of your own intelligence.

To answer my own question, I guess I need to figure out when Country went wherever it went. I think Alabama had a lot to do with it, somewhere around 1980. I don’t think it was any one song, group, album or year…rather, I think the idea of the band Alabama and who they appealed to started a kind of wave that led to the cookie cutter environment you have in Nashville now. Press-release Medicine and Press-release Science

Filed under: General, Misanthropy, Personal — Hal @ 9:41 am

Alwin doesn’t trust ‘press-release medicine‘ and I don’t trust ‘press-release science.’ I refer here to a large majority of ‘news’ concerning archaeological and fossil human ancestor finds.

Nope, it’s all about shakin’ those money trees

Vacation Report

OK, don’t forget that there is a difference between ’save’ and ‘publish.’ So I guess I’ll write a bit of something here. More with some linkage in the morning.

Ian and I inside Lehman Caves at Great Basin National Park
It was 50°F inside the cave. Niiiiiicccce. For a variety of reasons this park had the coolest temperatures of our trip. It never got about the mid-90s and the nights were wonderful.

At the San Rafael Swell in central Utah
It felt like it was 20,000°K. Hotter than blue friggin’ blazes. Actually, it was something like 117°F…

The 4Runner (“Shiva, the SUV Destroyer of Worlds” cf. Dave Rogers) turned up a milestone of its own…

Five ‘5’s… If we’re playing poker and you call with this hand, there’s liable to be some raised voices.

Bill Clinton’s Trip to Connecticut – Sister Soldjah Redux

Filed under: Politics — Hal @ 10:41 am

Maven nails it hard concerning Bill Clinton’s Connecticut visit to boost the Joementum. Worth a read…

Bill Clinton’s stumping for Joe Lieberman is less about his supporting Lieberman in next month’s Connecticut primary, and more a warning shot across the bow to us, the liberal base.

It was a Sister Soldjah moment. (more)

Surfing the Heat Wave

Filed under: Las Vegas Local, Personal — Hal @ 10:30 am

We’re back in Las Vegas where the temps were an unofficial 118°F yesterday. More on the vacation in a bit.
