“Fletcher Penney’s MultiMarkdown is a wonderful script that can convert Markdown formatted text into HTML, LaTeX and even RTF. In fact, since it converts to valid XHTML first and then applies XSLT parsing to convert into other formats, the world is your bivalved mollusc. via bsag

Whiny children, claims a new study, tend to grow up rigid and traditional. Future liberals, on the other hand … (you’ve probably already seen this)

The Great Transformation
Going beyond God [Salon]
Historian and former nun Karen Armstrong has a new book out titled The Great Transformation. Further, she says the afterlife is a “red herring,” hating religion is a pathology and that many Westerners cling to infantile ideas of God. Interesting stuff, and this brief interview is worth a read.
I have been thinking a lot about the ‘Axial Age’1 of late and I’m not sure why. Not that I think there is a ‘why.’ But I have been wondering how things were different at that time.
This story is at Salon, so you will have to watch an ad if you are not a subscriber, but I think it’s worth it. IMO, of course.
1 A phrase coined by the German philosopher Karl Jaspers. This is the era when many great sages appeared, including the Buddha, Socrates, Confucius, Jeremiah and the mystics of the Upanishads. Paulson 2006.

Over the Weekend
We had a three day weekend and spent it doing mostly family stuff. The biggest news, or at least the news that will have an effect beyond the weekend is that the cat population is now equal to ‘1′ again.
Dr. Liz functions as a matchmaker for those who may, or may not, realize that they need a pet in their lives. We realized it, but were mostly postponing incrementing the quadruped count to its former level. But, we now have an 8-week old gray tabby with white named Miranda (The Tempest, 11th known moon of Uranus) living with us.
I had really forgotten how very tiny an 8-week old kitten is. Or how very, very cute they are. I am pleased to observe that Ian is very good with her, gentle and slow. Consequently she attacks his toes without provacation which makes him squeal, “she’s GETTING me!” followed by lots of giggling.
This is going to be fun!
One of the other things we did was go to Over the Hedge. Hands down the best Dreamworks movie I’ve seen. I’m actually looking forward to seeing it again when it hits DVD.

Not bad at all.
History Will Be Kind to Him, for He Intends to Write It
Our own Kevin Murphy (where do you get this ‘our’ stuff?) is one of the “founding bloggers of Revise and Dissent, a recently launched group effort by younger historians and historians-to-be over at the History News Network.”
Congrats, Kevin. I’m looking forward to it…
