Narnicles, Vol. I

Since Audrey has taken a block of time off for various Saturnalia-related activities, we took a couple of hours and caught a matinee The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe today.

I have fond memories of reading TLWW (and the other 8 books in the series) decades ago and saw nothing that differed from those memories in terms of stressing Lewis’ Christian allegory in the film (cf. Doug’s reaction). Quite an enjoyable movie, really.

Filed under: Friends, General, Weblogs — Hal @ 11:17 am

Susan has put up her resolutions for 2006. Others likely have as well. I need to think about wheather or not I will do that. Perhaps a 2005/2006 post…

President Nixon Was Not Above the Law, and Neither is President Bush

ACLU ad in 12/29/05 NYTimes

In New National Ad, ACLU Calls for Investigation Into President’s Illegal Surveillance of U.S. Citizens
The text of today’s advertisement compares the words of President Nixon and President Bush, both of whom denied allegations of illegal spying. Next to the image of Nixon, the advertisement says: “He lied to the American people and broke the law.” Below that is an image of President Bush, with the words, “So did he.”

WordPress 2.0

Filed under: Software, Weblogs — Hal @ 7:56 pm

I have been using WordPress on this site and I note that the stable release has hit version 2.0. The WP site itself has also undergone a redesign.

Following the dictum of “if it ain’t broke, …” I probably won’t upgrade for a while.

Meanwhile, I will have a look at things like Upgrading to WP 2.0 and some other resources.

[update:] Alwin does the upgrade to 2.0 and notes these upgrade instructions.

That Was Fun!

Filed under: Family, Friends, Ian, Personal — Hal @ 11:35 pm

Woo-Hoo! It’s pretty darn fun to be 4 on Christmas. There was plenty of fun to go around, and between the long distance phone calls to Grandparents and the festive attitudes, I’m bushed.

Highlight for Ian was an Audrey-made toy based on the Little Einsteins rocket. Ian has quickly become a big, big fan of this new animated show from the folks who do the Baby Einsteins stuff. Audrey did a great sculpting job and Ian is just smitten.

I hope you all had a good day.

I’m the Last Creature Stirring…

An excited little boy has been asleep for some time — but before he went to bed we set out cookies and milk for Santa. I guess now we’ll see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And we heard him exclaim as he dove out of sight (under the covers), “A Merry Newtonmas to all and to all a good night!”

With apologies to just about everyone.

Where Were You Guys When the Rebels Saved Us From Bush?

Filed under: Family, Politics — Hal @ 3:04 pm

Via Aaron Freeman:

When my daughters are little old ladies and their grandchildren ask, “Where were you guys when the rebels saved us from Bush?” I want them to brag, “We were in Chicago, Washington, San Francisco. We’re not lying, check our FBI files!”

I want my daughters to know the joys of rebellion, the delights of fighting out-gunned and against the grain. I want them to breathe deeply the electric air outside the main herd. That the other side has the FBI just makes the fight more romantic. A ragtag band of news junkies, partisans, and assorted kooks against the great media/industrial death star, Morpheus against the Matrix, rebels against the state, like in 1965 and 1776.

I had despaired that my children would have no great monsters to slay, no forge for their mettle. But there ain’t a greater call to American action than a warning from the FBI to shut up. Conscience makes rebels of us all. [ more]

Happy Holidays!

Filed under: Family, Ian, Personal — Hal @ 2:14 pm

Whatever and however you celebrate during this time of year, we hope you are enjoying it. We’re two Buddhists celebrating Christmas with a tree and all the trimmings with our four year old son.

During 2004 Ian really didn’t grok that Christmas involved gifting or that is was happening until it was pretty much over. This year Ian began getting excited about it in July. This year the house has lights on it (white, non-blinking)

So, he is taking his final nap prior to Christmas Eve and then Santa will come tonight. Ian is real big on Santa coming with gifts. Which I completely understand since he is the only child of two only children with three doting Grandparents and just doesn’t have any toys or *anything.*

“You can help little Ian or you can turn the page…”   ;-)

The cat, Dodger, has been enjoying the tree more than any of the bipeds in the house. He looks to be quite comfy if you are small enough to slip under there and nestle among the packages.

So, to my many fellow bloggers as well as Sir Death, Dr. Liz and Eric, EG and Nicole, Jake (wherever the hell you are), Ursula. Chris, Terry (without the Pirates), Ted and Kelly, James and his family, and doubtless many others I have neglected to mention, we wish you a Happy Solstice, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanauka, Happy Diwali, Happy Yule, Happy Kwanza, … a very Happy Holy-days.

An Explosion on the Moon

Read about this via Eliot. It turns out, I could have listened to it as well.

So you thought nothing ever happens on the moon? [NASA]
NASA scientists have observed an explosion on the moon. The blast, equal in energy to about 70 kg of TNT, occurred near the edge of Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Rains) on Nov. 7, 2005, when a 12-centimeter-wide meteoroid slammed into the ground traveling 27 km/s.

“What a surprise,” says Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) researcher Rob Suggs, who recorded the impact’s flash. He and colleague Wes Swift were testing a new telescope and video camera they assembled to monitor the moon for meteor strikes. On their first night out, “we caught one,” says Suggs. [more]

Very cool! It’s hard to get research luck like that.

It Doesn’t Look a Bit Like Christmas

The currnet high temperature prediction for Christmas Eve in Las Vegas is 70°F. Crazy.
