Halloween 2005

Filed under: Family, Ian, Las Vegas Local, Personal — Hal @ 9:20 pm

Ian was really into wearing a costume for Halloween this year, so we went all out.

And I couldn’t let him go alone…

And we had a great time! Audrey dressed up as the ‘Evil Queen’ from Snow White.

This year, however, we went a little lower tech in the yard.

Sixty-six percent of those polled said that George Bush’s performance concerning the war in Iraq was ‘poor’ or ‘very poor.’ The other 34 percent think Adam and Eve rode a dinosaur to church on Sunday. ESRI ArcGIS Explorer Website Up

This could be interesting. We’ll have to see how ArcGIS Explorer shapes up in comparison (and hopefully in concert with) Google Earth. But, like Mateusz Łoskot commented in the thread on Spatially Adjusted, “there won’t be any portable Java version :-( So, there is still no Google Earth-like software on Unix.”

No, Mateusz, nowhere but Windows XP. And in my opinion, that’s a problem…

Fall Back

Just in case it has slipped your mind, Daylight Savings Time for 2005 is about to come to an end. So remember to set those clocks back one hour tonight when you go to bed, or wait until tomorrow morning at local 2am if you’re up at that time. Unless you live in most of Arizona, or on certain Indian Reservations. Or certain Department of Defense facilities. Or … (insert your own exception here).

Ah, back to go old -0800 UTC.

Australians Demonstrate Greater Intelligence Than Americans

Filed under: Religion, Science — Hal @ 8:37 pm

At least when it comes to what is included in science curricula.

We don’t want a bunch of Australians to show us up, do we? [Pharyngula]
Here’s a common sense decision from an Australian education minister: Kosky rules intelligent design a faith. Can we do the same thing now?

Victoria’s government schools will treat intelligent design as a religious faith, not science, Education Minister Lynne Kosky has ruled. (more)

Great use of Mr. Occam’s handy Razor there, Oz!

Europe’s first pyramid?

Filed under: Archaeology, Non Compos Mentis, Personal — Tags: , — Hal @ 1:02 pm

Via jason kottke’s remainders I was led to this from the BBC and this from Dino Avdibegovic.

Pyramid found - in the heart of Bosnia!! [UNJOURNALED]
Near the city of Visoko, 30 km north of Sarajevo, there is a stone pyramid of monumental size, claims the Bosnian archeologist Semir Osmanagić, who lives and works in the USA.

After several months of geological and archeological research, Mr. Osmanagić concluded that under the present hill of Visočica hides a stairs-like pyramid, about 12,000 years old. Osmanagić, who intensively researched on pyramids in Americas, Asia and Africa for the last 15 years and wrote several books on the subject, says he’s quite sure he found the first pyramid in Europe, which is quite similar to ones in the Southern America.

He believes that the project would completely change Bosnia’s significance in the world of archeology. [no shkidding –ed.]

On the top of “Bosnian pyramid of Sun” was a temple, built by pre-Illyrians, people who lived, according to Osmanagić, 27,000 years ago. (more)

I know nothing of Osmanagić’s work or his reputation and only scant more of ‘Old World’ archaeology any more. I only took the required distrubution courses on post-Upper Paleolithic Europe and frankly, don’t recall much except the high points any more.

If I recall correctly, the inital date for the Illyrians is about 1,000 B.C. (roughly the end of the Bronze age in the region), so 25,000 B.C. (or was it 10,000 B.C., hmm) is certainly ‘pre-Illyrian.’ [later: yes 1, 2] Rather, I suspect there are some Croatian v. Serbian ancestral land claims and nationalistic agendas at play here.

Still, Osmanagić could be on to something, but he will need to back off the Illyrian Pyramid of Sun/Pyramid of Moon stuff until he has some evidence if he wants to get a fair audience. Too many will think him a bit daft otherwise.

[addendum]
Hmm, there does seem to be a blog of some sort about the pyramid. Uh oh. If it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck

No, I can’t read the text, I think the pictures tell enough of a story for me.

John Fogerty Can Sing His Own Songs Again

Fogerty Back on Fantasy Records [Yahoo! News]
The man who wrote and performed “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Down on the Corner,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain”, “Green River” and a whole bunch of other great music can perform them again. How you ask? Well, last year Zaentz sold Fantasy Records and that, as they say, has made all the difference.

Yeah, pretty lame. I really couldn’t think of anything clever that Al would be writing on the board in my corner of curved space.

[Get it? How can you have a “corner of curved space”? … OK, be that way. I’m going to bed.]
