I’m seeing references to the Google Maps API all over the place. Whoda thunk it?

WordPress 1.5.1.3 Update

Filed under: Software, Weblogs — Hal @ 10:53 am

I really have to get around to updating WordPress on this site and Lavagrrl’s. I like to delude myself in thinking that one of the advantage of having a truly low-traffic site is the likliehood of breaches is low. I hope.

WordPress 1.5.1.3 Available
[A]n important security issue was brought to our attention which required an update for our users. The problem is not yet public but you should update your blog as soon as possible to 1.5.1.3. If you are unable to do upgrade in the short-term you may protect yourself by deleting the xmlrpc.php file from your WordPress directory.

OK, I’ll do it tonight. Really.

Well, that was easy! :-)

I Would Like to See This Movie

Almost everything I have seen or read about Primer makes me want to see it or buy the DVD. Duane over at Deadprogrammer’s Cafe is aggravating that notion.

I Also Made Some Science

But I suppose it is more like making some data. MIT will make the science.

Jedediah Smith, b. 1798

On this day, a long time ago, Jedediah Smith was born.

“I wanted to be the first to view a country on which the eyes of a white man had never gazed and to follow the course of rivers that run through a new land.”

Part of his story (as well as other Mountain Men) was used for Jeremiah Johnson. [I have never been clear on whether or not Vardis Fisher's Mountain Man was used as a basis for that movie.] He was also the first American to reach California overland from the east across the Mojave Desert. He was the first to return east across the Great Basin from California. Nevada’s Highway 6 and Interstate 15 through Utah roughly follows part of his route.

Scientists Opting Out of the Debate on Evolution vs. Creationism or Intelligent Design

Scientists Opting Out of the Debate on Evolution vs. Creationism or Intelligent Design New York Times [via kottke's remainders]

And who can blame us for avoiding show trials? The ID folks have certainly framed it well for themselves. If we engage them they move the target. If we don’t engage them they say, ‘what are they afraid of.’ No-Win situtation for science. I continue to be amazed that my home state of Kansas is so full of kooks.

Just another example of how we inhabit the Demon Haunted World.

And Not a Moment Too Soon

Great Ghu! One of the jobs I have been hoping to apply for since last October has finally been posted. Now where did I put those job hunt materials? The others may be shaking loose soon as well…

We’ve been spending $1k/month on health insurance since February (yes, I know, we are not the only ones doing that). It sure would be nice to get on a health plan that would pay for part of that. Some semblance of financial stability would be nice as well.
