Social Software

Filed under: Information, Software, Weblogs — Hal @ 1:53 pm

Iowa John put up this blink:

Robert Paterson writes about Going Home - Our Reformation. It’s worth reading if you don’t understand where the social software people are coming from.

I have never really thought about social software before. Now I want to know a lot more. Thanks for that pointer, John.

2004 Koufax Award Winners. “The Koufax Awards are intended to help forge a sense of community among lefty bloggers and their readership. We hope make introductions of bloggers to each other and to readers. We also hope to create a sense that we all live in the same virtual neighborhood and that it is a very nice neighborhood indeed.”

I visit some of these on a regular basis and some are part of my daily round. Others are completely new to me and I’ll be checking them out.

All of them are very good at what they do…

Bone Marrow Update

I realized that some of you might be wondering about my medical status based on what I posted late November and December of last year. I had an appointment with the Hematologist last week and got the scoop. This is the report form the consultant:

This patient has persistent thrombocytosis (700,000-800,000) sustained over the last several years. The peripheral blood confirms the thrombocytosis. The bone marrow aspirate, particle clot section and biopsy are within the cellular range (up to 60% cellular) however do show focal clustering of megakaryocytes. Given the history of sustained persistent platelet counts of 700,000-800,000, the marrow would be consistent with a diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia.

The upshot is that I am unusually young for such a diagnosis and the typical drugs for treatment have side effects that are pretty severe, including making your likelihood of developing leukemia spike.

My platelets were about 550,000 the day of this visit, so he put me on a low-dose aspirin regimen. And we’ll keep watching it.

More rain

Filed under: Las Vegas Local — Hal @ 2:19 pm

We’re not having anything like Susan and others are in southern California, but for the this little bit of the northern Moajve, we are swimming. It was partly cloudy this morning, but began to move into a low overcast around noon.

About 15 minutes ago (1400 -0800 GMT) is started to rain. Then harder, much harder. Hail arrived with some pretty good wind gusts (maybe up to 35 mph). Then bigger hail, about 1 cm.

I’ve been here since 1985 and only remember hail one other time. When ‘tornadic’ (according to the local news media) winds hit the airport. I think that was about 1991.

Freakin’ hail. My Kansas-bred instincts tell me to look for the funnel clouds…

Maybe a ‘rain of frogs’ too.

1430 update: And now it’s over…

We’re Back

Filed under: General, Weblogs — Hal @ 12:12 pm

Had a bit of a MySQL/PHP outage for about 14 hours. I think we’re back now.

For whatever reason, this weblog is not showing up on blo.gs the same way. I was not seeing this update, so I did a search. You may need to check your own settings and add this site again. Well, I did anyway.

R.I.P. Hunter S. Thompson 1937-2005

Filed under: Books, Personal, Popular Culture — Hal @ 1:52 am

“I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone … but they’ve always worked for me.”

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive…” And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: “Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?”

Then it was quiet again. My attorney had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. “What the hell are you yelling about?” he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. “Never mind,” I said. “It’s your turn to drive.” I hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough… <…>

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Shit. The darkness took him.

Reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was the first time I realized I wanted to write. Reading Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail engaged me with politics for the first time. The rest of his books and articles simply added to that feeling.

And I was still trying to come to grips with the death of Warren Zevon last year…

Site Upgrade

Filed under: Software, Weblogs — Hal @ 1:01 am

Just testing to see if the upgrade to WordPress 1.5 worked.

Moments later: Alright!

25 minutes later: I’ve been poking around under the hood, it looks like a pretty impressive upgrade. The template tweaks will have to wait until later (when it’s less early).

Hardware v. Software

Filed under: General, Misanthropy, Technology — Hal @ 4:03 pm

Audrey came home from seeing a movie just as I was cleaning up from getting the dishwasher running. Again. I made some comment about ‘hating technology’ because at that very moment I wanted nothing in my life more complicated than a hammer. Or perhaps Mr. Ingram’s MAC-10.

She replied that I did not, in fact, ‘hate technology.’ but rather hated machines. Especially that one in particular.

They are so right, those who put up with us…

Oh yeah, the dishwasher is working again. For now. shudder
