NV Geologists in NM #

A certain Ph.D. student is in the midst of a four-day whirlwind Geology field trip to New Mexico. Somewhere near Las Cruces, something about bearing witness to an exemplary exposure of metamorphosed volcanic rocks… ¡No sé hablo Igneous-Metamorphic Petrology!

David Hits the Big L #

David Singer (who we haven’t heard from in a while ˜ it sounds like he has been busy) trips the counter from XLIX to L today.

Conversations… #

Had a video chat with Dave tonight. I’ve never spoken with him before, though there have been many emails. iChat AV and the iSight take things to a very personal level. Just like tawkin’, only free. (ok, there is the computer, and the camera, and the cable modem. but then, it’s like, free)

Dave is a great guy, I’m just sorry I’m not a very spontaneous conversationalist. I look forward to the next time. Now if I could just get the various Grandparents with the program…

Congratulations Herr Doctor! #

John, er…, Doctor VanDyk has successfully defended his dissertation!

Naming Things #

Rodinia lost out to ‘Zevon.’ Just hoping it doesn’t get pot roast rubbed on it or hurled against the wall as hard as she can…

Galileo, RIP #

Susan has some good thoughts and links about the end of the NASA spacecraft, Galileo.

short and brief #

It has been a busy week with not much time to note things here, much less comment.

Doug is older, but has a new powerbook as small compensation for his advanced chronological state.

I have been out of town (and back) for a board meeting for the Nevada Archaeological Association and Audrey has been busy with teaching assistant things like taking Geology 101 students on field trips. Ian is 23 months old today and it is almost the equinox.

Meanwhile, I going to take a nap alongside that little boy…

Alwin on Cash #

Alwin has his second music related post up this week up today, this time on Johnny Cash. I recommend it highly.

Iowa John to Defend Ph.D. #

John is set to defend his dissertation on the 22nd. Thus far TheDocument is at 259 pages, prior to committee ‘comments’… Quite a milestone, congratulations John!

Waren Zevon Dead at 56 #

Rest in Peace, Warren.

Craig has put together a nice set of Zevon linkage. [later (2130)] Craig has continued to add to today’s BookNotes. It is now far beyond a ‘nice set.’ Thanks so much, Craig.

Al Franken without the Intellect #

Or the sense of humor, either. I’ve never been one to play matchmaker. Sadly, the only time I would want to, there is no one on deck. So sensors are deployed. Failing that, at least they would be healthy cats…

This is Rather Obvious… #

We made it back from the Land of Ut-ah unscathed. E.G. and Nicole got hitched, then much partying ensued. Audrey and Ian left after the dinner amd got to spend about an hour in the heated pool at the Day’s Inn. Afterwards he was pretty tuckered did his sack of potatos imitation until a relatively decent hour Sunday morning. Audrey picked up some Polygamy Porter micro-brew on the way back for future festive occasions.

While We Were Out #

Alwin triped the counter one more time yesterday. Happy Birthday!

Things That Never Were #

Matt Rossi’s book is out. If you like, you can order it via the title link. Excellent!

Firefly: The Movie #

"The short-lived TV series “Firefly” is moving to the big screen." [CNN]

Great news, I loved that show. [Thanks to Dave and Dori]

Wedding Bell Blues #

Tomorrow we are heading to Richfield, Utah for a friend’s wedding. The critters will be in the capable hands of Dr. Liz.

On the Naming of Things #

An update concerning the naming of Audrey’s PowerBook ˜ Rodinia [1, 2, 3] is strongly in the mix.

Another Computer #

The deed is done. I sure don’t want to hear about the economy having a ’soft’ tech sector due to low consumer confidence. Audrey is now the proud owner of a 12″ PowerBook (combo drive with maxed ram and an airport card), a 10 gig iPod and the usual software suspects. We went back to the Apple Store today And hopefully made some sales person’s day.

I took home an iSight for Trinity, the flat screen iMac. [Drop me an email if you’d like to see if this thing works…] No decision yet on what she is going to name her little beauty. I suspect she will depart from the Matrix machine naming convention (Neo and Trinity) she started to something geological. I’m hoping for something along the lines of Pangaea, Gondwanaland or Laurasia.
