It Could Have Been Worse… #

This one from The People’s Republic of Seabrook

What Is Your Battle Cry?

Lo! Who is that, skulking amidst the freeway! It is Blivet, hands clutching a reflective halberd! He roars thunderously:

“I’m going to brutalize you into a new dimension of pain!!!”

The Altar of Commerce #

Audrey is shopping for a laptop and stuff for school. So, we went to church this morning to get some hands-on with the holy relics. Biggest disappointment is that the preferred option doesn’t support the Mothership’s own display when docked back at the starbase blivet. Not a deal-stopper by any means, but she would be like to have all the hardware match.

[PBS] The Sacred Balance #

Tonight on Now with Bill Moyers I heard about David Suziki’s lastest offering, The Sacred Balance. The program will discusses how human beings are intimately connected to all life processes on Earth. It is very likely we’ll be watching.

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra

“A dedicated scientist, aided by his clueless wife, rolls up his shirt sleeves and tries to save the world from a radioactive monster, curious space aliens, an evil scientist and a crabby skeleton in this send-up of the best of the B movies of the 1950’s.” [imdb] [trailer]

I think I need to see this with Dave

The Red Planet #

Tonight, Mars is closer to Earth (that’s our planet, btw) than it has been in over 60,000 years. It happens on the 27th in GMT, but in Pacific Daylight Time Zone (which is -0700 land), it’s 2100 today, the 26th. [via Susan]

later: I stand corrected! Susan has informed me (based on an impeccable source who used publicly available information - shame on me for not checking!) that Mars will, in fact, be at its closest at 0251 PDT on Thursday, the 27th. While we’re at it, Mars has not been this close since 59,619 years ago (that’s 57,617 BC), slightly less than 60kya [of course, 400 years at that antiquity is well within my old friend, radiometric error]. That’s also well into disputed territory for the world-wide appearance of fully modern Homo sapiens. For whatever that is worth…

Seeing Warren on tonight’s episode of Inside Out tonight was very touching… Here is some information on the album he has been working on, The Wind. I don’t have much else to say… later: because I am all choked up…

Warren Zevon on VH1 #

The Wind by Warren Zevon”>

Tonight…

"When singer/songwriter Warren Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare type of terminal lung cancer in August of 2002, his wish was to record an album dedicated to saying goodbye to the people he loved…." [more]

personal and public (mis)information #

The Misanthropes Club, a new webblog by Dr. Liz. I’ve never known someone who started a webblog, except for Audrey’s brief foray. Either I have met people because of their blog or they have expressed very little interest in the, um, form.

I don’t know if I should tell her ‘bravo’ or ‘oh my god, what are you thinking?!?’

AFTERMATH OF FLOOD: Residents work to clear muck #

"Storms that ravaged northwest Las Vegas on Tuesday caused about $2 million in damage to public facilities and roads and spawned more than 1,000 homeowner insurance claims, officials reported Wednesday." [more]

A slide show of images of Tuesday’s events may be of interest to folks. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.

Severe Flooding Hits Parts of Las Vegas [LV Sun]

"Powerful thunderstorms dumped as much as 3 inches of rain on parts of Las Vegas and Henderson, causing flash floods that trapped motorists atop their cars and swamped some neighborhoods … The intense storm dumped 3 inches of rain in 90 minutes in one area, overwhelming flood control channels. Officials said 2.3 inches of rain was recorded in 20 minutes in one spot…" [more]

It was fairly exciting on the drive home. Instead of the usual 10, it took about 90 minutes. ‘Swamped neighborhoods’ include the Gowan & US95 area, about a mile and a half north of where we are.

I see that DC is safe and sound down Henderson/Green Valley way.

Details Emerge of Iceman Ötzi’s Death #

"A fatal battle marked the last 48 hours of Ötzi the Iceman, the world’s oldest and best-preserved mummy, according to new dramatic findings.

The findings will air in the documentary Iceman: Hunt for a Killer, which airs on Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. ET on the Discovery Channel.

Microscopic blood traces on the mummy’s cloak and weapons have revealed four different sequences of ancient human DNA, suggesting that Ötzi was killed by one or more assailants in a fight." [more]

Not exactly current (the story is dated the 13th), but there you go. It is just a shame the mummy was originally removed in such a ham-fisted manner. A lot of these questions might already have answers.

Day Off #

I’m taking my ‘birthday holiday’ today, so I am home from work. Yea! Paid to be home from work! Trouble is, everywhere I turn, I see ‘things to be done’, most of which greatly resemble work.

This could be the foundations for those ‘you have no idea how good you have it, blah, blah, I had to walk uphill both ways in knee-deep snow to get to school, blah, blah, bleeding feet, blah, blah, wolves ate the slow-moving kids, blah, blah’ tirades I heard that I swore I would not inflict on my child.

Or not, he will find out soon enough the next time Grandma is in town and tells Ian, again, about how his father (me) was horrible, horrible!. Whatever, I just remind her who will be picking her rest home…

Note To Fellow Flatlanders: #

If you are not vigilant, beach sand gets in everything. Which means the aforementioned comes home with you to get in everything else.

I grew up in Kansas, where these things are not part of the curriculum. We do, however, get extensive experience in avoiding cow patties and not tracking it into vehicles or the house. Perhaps the penalities for beach sand transport are less severe…

Happy Anniversary To Andrea and André! #

Last year, Garret, Sandra, and I were part of Andrea and André’s wedding in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Congratulations you two!
