"I got her! She’s back inside, safe and sound!"

I don’t know about you (and I don’t really), but this just warms my heart. If our cat Dodger disappeared I would become a major tweaker. Smokey, who is the cat that is known to hang out with Jeff Cheney, is an indoor cat that ‘got out’. After a couple of weeks, Jeff has found her and they are back together. Now, we’ll just leave you two alone for a bit. Smokey want some tuna? Nice kitty. Don’t do that again, okay?

Archaeology stuff…

We went semi-public with an archaeological find today, it will probably hit the local papers in a couple of weeks when we have enough exposed to be photogenic. As far as we know, it is the first Anasazi pithouse found in the Las Vegas valley. It is related to the Virgin Anasazi to the northeast in the Muddy River drainage. We got a 1,280±40 BP 14C date from the central firepit. More to come later, like pictures. This will probably end up being a peer-reviewed article, maybe in The Kiva. It is too late for the Great Basin Anthropological Conference in October, but rest assured we will have photos and stuff with us. Work is underway on the SAA abstract for the national meetings in the spring.

Report: Caffeine lowers skin cancer risk [SciAm, Salon]

I had a squamous cell skin cancer (Bowen’s Disease) removed a while back. It was initially typed as basal cell, but I got updated information at the six-week checkup, which I never put up here. Similar to Dori, I am hoping that the caffeine in Dr. Pepper counts. However, it also seems like the effects of caffeine are a mixed boon. [Alwin and Dori]

New domicile

Got a tour this evening of Dr. ‘Liz’s new townhouse, now with paint on the sheet rock, carpet, and toilet paper in the bathrooms. Ah, luxury. She got the keys a couple of days ago. She is the best of friends when moving, she is hiring professionals to do it.

Andrea & André

Got an email from ‘the newlyweds’, they have been to Taos Pueblo, Mesa Verde, Petrified Forest NP, and some of the national parks around Flagstaff. Tomorrow is the Grand Canyon and a day hike into the Canyon. Have fun you two!

QOTD

“Humility is achieved more easily when you look at what you’ve just created and realize that all you have to do is change the labels on the ideas and you’ve got something that someone else already thought of.”
–John VanDyk [View from an Iowa Homestead]

OS X

Dave, Alwin and Doug have all seemed to have good luck with the move to 10.2 (X.II?). I’ll go ahead and order it since we’ll get it as part of the purchase of the new iMac.

Grad School II

Audrey survived her encounter with the GRE. The new (to me anyway) computer-based test tells you your score immediately, thus eliminating the six weeks of score anxiety following the several hours of exam anxiety. “Why when we took the GRE, we had to wait for months to get our scores!” “Scores? You got scores? We just got rocks with little tiny scratches on ‘em. You had to count them all to know what your score was! And we liked it that way!” [spelling edits]

Skull and Cactus Society

garret and Kevin Drennan are climbing Santa Fe Baldy as I write this. They will be unconcerned about volcanic activity during their adventure. later:bloggers bag baldy, feed fauna and live to tell the tale!

On this day

It was a sunny morning in A.D. 79 when the volcano Vesuvius erupted and buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The Visigoths overran Rome in A.D. 410, the event which now generally symbolizes the fall of the Western Roman Empire. I don’t know if it was sunny or not.

Audrey is taking the Graduate Record Exam this morning as a part of the application process for yet another graduate degree (Ph.D. in Geosciences). I wish her well. [spelling edits]

15 minutes of local fame

Ian got his picture in the Las Vegas Review-Journal today as part of a story on child-care providers.

Urf!

garret seems to be be having server problems. The web equivalent of a busy signal. minutes later: it must have been an ephemeral server hiccup, he’s back.

Welcome Rosanna Lyn Jacobs Anderson!

“My daughter, Rosanna Lyn Jacobs Anderson, was born today at about 3:30 pm EDT.” [genehack]
Congratulations, John and Laura! We know who did the heavy lifting.

Cats

I’m really hoping to hear that Jeff’s cat, Smokey, gets back home.

BlogCon 2002

Matt will not be at BlogCon 2002. That just about cinches that I won’t wander down to the strip to check it out.

And baby make three

Tomorrow is the day at genehack! I hope everything goes smoothly!

Happy ‘Birthday’ Little Guy!

Today is Ian’s ten month ‘birthday.’ He is getting so big so very fast. Many people lamented ‘they grow so fast’, I had no idea…
