Happy Birthday to Tina at the Homestead. Are we to infer that there will be a new chicken wrangler come, oh, mid-July? (I may have missed something earlier, I have been known to do that.)

[Fool.com] Apple: It’s not About the OS Anymore [CamWorld]

"AppleScript is a way cool technology. Speaking as a NeXT bigot, I’d have to say that AppleScript is by far the coolest software technology that NeXT acquired when they sneakily executed their buyout of Apple for negative $400 million. :-)"

Council for Secular Humanism: Does Morality Require God? [yet another from garret]

The Gradual Illumination of the Mind: The advance of science, not the demotion of religion, will best counter the influence of creationism. [Scientific American: Skeptic] It’s just really nice to read something in the dead tree version and be able to point to the web version.

Jim’s description of his impression of some old emails between Dave Winer and Bill Joy are very evocative… that may well be indicative of a large portion of the tech community.

"– Dave’s emails remind me of email I’ve received from Philip Greenspun; terse bordering on rude, self-confident bordering on arrogant.

– Joy’s responses sound like the zen koan-based ravings of someone with a gigantic intellect who is somewhat out of touch with reality."

Later: Lest one suspect I am slinging hash at either Dave or Bill, I’m not. I have been accused of both arrogance and being out of touch with reality, though not with quite as civil a tone. In the last couple of days. That I heard.

Doc is rereading John McPhee’s Basin and Range. What an amazingly good book.

USS Clueless - Quantity and Quality in research. via Serious Instructional Technology (SiT). The article cracked me up, for a variety of reasons. David’s comment, ("All that aside, it’s easy to do bad research in any subject area.") however, made me laugh out loud because I’m not sure they would readily admit to it. David got the original link from The Flangy News.

Thanks to garret, I found out that Edward Bilodeau was back online (perhaps you recall Calebos.org) with an Online Journal - Notes and Scribblings. Hi Ed!

NASA/JPL recently released 1-arc second and 3-arc second DEMs of California from the February 2001 Suttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Some sample 3D rendered terrain is at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/index.html Click on the link under "Images for January 22, 2002" or go directly to the sample page with descriptions at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/california.html JPL used Natural Scene Designer to render most of these images.

I would add another Tom Hanks movie, Joe vs. the Volcano, to Dave’s first category ("[T]here are two kinds of movies I most enjoy, those that are serious about not taking themselves seriously, and those that deal with themes all of us must face in life, either dramatically or comedically"). IMO, of course.

Raise the Fist Raided, Shutdown. [Kuro5hin]

and so it continues, like a slow-motion bus crash. I’m with Doug and others on this. This is not the situation I want, especially now that we have Ian. I can only imagine having to answer questions like, "why didn’t you do anything Daddy?" It is starting with ’safer’ targets that few will object to, like Raise the Fist. Watch for those who are merely ‘unsupportive’ to eventfully be targeted. I still can’t believe there is absolutely no congressional oversight of The Office of Homeland Security.

"While I agreed after September 11th that steps had to be taken to neutralize the terrorist threat to the U.S., I’m growing ever-more suspicious at the actions of law enforcement and the government in taking advantage of this situation.(…)

I do believe most people can see through this. Unfortunately, I’m not sure most people care enough to have the opportunity to see through it."[Erehwon Notebook]

Thanks for the kind words about Ian. Like any new parent, I never tire of looking at him or talking about him.
